MORE ON TWIN CITIES BUPRENORPHINE PRESS REPORT (see previous blog)

Denial of Buprenorphine to those who want and need it is said to be analogous to “telling diabetics that we have insulin, but they can’t have it.” But hey - this is absolutely what we’ve been telling opiate-dependent people desperately seeking methadone for the past 40 years! The frustration – and outrage– should be the same. So how come the medical community has never expressed such outrage?

Perhaps it is because those who should have the most vested in promoting both the medication and the modality have instead primarily worked to further justify its uniquely restricted status. If the specialists have such a distorted view of their patients and their needs why should the generalists feel any differently?

Agree peter - self-interest on the part of the providers. Goes with giving folks a monopoly - they inevitably want to preserve it.
