METHADONE PACKAGE INSERT: use as directed, (but make sure your heirs have a good malpractice lawyer available)

An article in the Gazette-Mail (Charleston, West Virginia – July 23) on rising methadone deaths correctly states that this tragedy has been known for several years to be associated with methadone’s use for pain management, rather than for maintenance treatment of addiction. The article notes that the “package insert” – the manufacturer’s advice to doctors and patients that is included with every prescription that's filled – cites a dosage range that is known, unequivocally, to be potentially lethal in non-tolerant patients (up to 10 mg q.3h. or 80 mg within 24 hours). Must we wait for a $100 million award for the death of a patient taking the medication as recommended, and prescribed, before the manufacturer gets the message? That’ll do it, for sure, but how many needless deaths will there be in the interim?

I have been on 100 mg of methadone for 2 years and I agree that no one should be able to go that high of dose. I was buying meth illegally for 2 years and was perfectly fine on 20 mg. I went up to 100 just because i still had that junky attitude and figured if i could get i'd take it.,but other wise methadone has made me a productive person again and not broke all the time either and employers don't notice it and it does not effect me adversly as far as i know, except in the sexual area, i have very little desire. I detoxed one time and you still get a little sick and you still have to really want to quit, it's not easy, you will be depressed and will not have normal sleep patterns for up to a year, but all in all i see it as very helpful compared to needled, which i did'nt do and Dr. shopping or finding a dealer. I got my life alot more normal. As far as the death goes you cannot mix benzo's, valium xanax or alcohol with or your asking for trouble maybe even death. I'm sorry if someone you loved died but i haven't heard of that happening as a rule, but when it's your loved one,one is to many.Have you investigated into any other drugs that may have been used, or maybe an unusual allery? Any way I'm sorry to hear this, but overall methadone has helped alot people who would now be dead

Hi, I am a chronic pain sufferer, and have had a hell of a time getting my pain meds, which weren't even that strong, Just Fiorinal #3's and then I got on Morphine Sulfate 100mg. time realese, and was on it for about a year and a half, and I got my LIFE back! I'm not a young person anymore, and have migraines and fibro myalgia with chronic fatigue, and back problems also, as I lived a pretty hectic life,( 27 years to an addicted husband, and I never took anything my dr. didn't prescribe, which were the Fiorinals (30 years on them with no problems!) But,2 years ago the dr. I had here just all of a sudden cut off my meds! I had to scramble just to survive! I was able to get enough from the net but wracked up some major credit debt doing it! So, when I got the morphine, I felt good all day and night on just one in the morning! I was able to go out and get a little part time job, 4 hrs. of pretty physical work, 5 days a week. But then all of a sudden I couldn't get it any more and so I was 2 days without anything and I'm telling you I was in HELL!! I've NEVER experienced anything so vicious as the black depression that set in and the total loss of energy, and aching all over! Well, you probably know what I mean. So now I have finally decided I want to go onto Methadone, for the rest of my life and get my life back again! Because, I have tried it before (from a friend who gave me 10) and they worked very well for me. I have found a dr. who will prescribe them, and all I need now is the money to go see him , as I have no health insurance. So don't villify a drug like methadone, it is different for each individual ( I studied nursing for two years before my life became so hectic with my ex-husband, whom I had to finally leave, which broke my heart and his too. Anyway, it is a godsend to those who need it. bye now, be well and pain free. anonymous
